Wintering in Central America

I head out today to meet my friends who owns this sailboat which is currently docked in Guatemala. I’m not sure how long we will be sailing but we are doing research and shooting some stories as we travel.  Dive gear and bathing suits are packed! I will post as often as possible.

Here’s a picture of the  Captain Ana Bianca,  she’s getting the Kajaya ready for our trip!

Getting Ready to Go

2014 I will be hitting the road.  Next month  I am off to meet friends with a sailboat in Guatemala. After sailing around central America for a bit I plan to hit Utila, Honduras to do some diving, writing and studying of Spanish. ( I know Spanish isn’t spoken much there but they do have a school on the island)

I have to meet a friend in Costa Rica the end of March and we will travel up to Bocas Del Toro in Panama. In May my outbound ticket to Guam has been bought as has my return from Jo’burg South Africa in August.  I have no idea where I will end up along the way but I will let you know when I figure it out.

It’s going to be an exciting year I hope you will spend it with me by checking out my blog and my twitter feed @newskimsegal.  Please feel free to send me any suggestions or advice.

As I wait for my year on the road to start I will be enjoying South Florida. Here is a picture of the Deerfield Beach Pier.

Daytrip to the Everglades

My excuse to see gators and eat fried Oreos are when friends show up in South Florida with their children. The day starts with the hour drive from Ft. Lauderdale to Coppertown, population 9 humans. Here you can rent a private airboat or purchase tickets for their frequent tours. In the picture below I am doing a show and tell with my nephew on sawgrass and behind us is an alligator. An hour is usually enough time to enjoy the boat road, see gators and birds and enjoy the beauty of this river of grass.

When done we always head to the public park’s Shark Valley entrance. On a nice day you can see gators bathing in the sun right on the banks of the foot path. Click the photo to see my story on this spectacular place.

Next we head up the street, before the turnpike, and stop at Moe’z for lunch. The food is good, nothing fancy, and the double stuffed fried Oreos are wonderful. Like us on FB to see more pictures of the spectacular wildlife we saw.

Vieques, Puerto Rico Page Added

I love Puerto Rico and the islands off the mainland are worthy of any beach lover. The islands of Vieques and Culebra are fun for the whole family. The snorkeling is great, the food is tasty and the people are friendly.  Click on the picture of  my favorite place to snorkel on the island, Green Beach, to read more about visiting Vieques.

Culebra vs Vieques 2013

20130814-090158.jpg

Two islands off mainland Puerto Rico. They are easily accessible via puddle jumper or ferry but very different. I am working on a page that will compare the two but this far if its snorkeling you’re into Culebra was fantastic! More to come on hotels, prices, restaurants and beaches.

Myanmar Hospitality

Proof that the journey is the destination:

We went to the Yangon football stadium to inquire about a game, while there I asked, “Can we see the inside of the stadium?” while pointing beyond the gate & clicking the air camera. The man guarding the gate responded with a question, “You like volleyball?” We said, “yes” unsure of why he asked. With hand signals we were directed to follow the woman. She waited as I posed with the football field behind me. Next thing I know we were directed to a concrete building that turned out to be a “gym.” Inside the dark, paint chipped room a volleyball game, the Myanmar national team practicing for the SEA Games. Upon entering a man directed us to a seat and a trainer served us tea as we watched practice.

This is why I love to travel!
